Speaker: Margaret Spence
Subject: As the Cold War brewed outside, inside a multi-generational house in Kew a domestic cold war erupted over class, politics and how to live. The head of the small girl in the household spun with the competing role models of her gentle mother, her autocratic paternal grandmother, and her adored but transgressive journalist aunt. Combining history with personal narrative and including accounts of some people well-known in Melbourne at the time, this memoir recalls controversies that dogged award winning author Margaret Spence’s childhood including the rights of women, refugees, and the Cold War–reminding us they are still topical.
