SUMMARY:CLUB DINNER
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 24 March 6.00pm for 6.30pm.\nSpeaker: Dr Elizabeth Finkel AM PhD\nSubject: Prove It: A Scientific Guide for the Post-Truth Era\nElizabeth Finkel is an award-winning science writer and one-time molecular biologist. She co-founded the popular Australian science magazine Cosmos, serving as Editor in Chief from 2013 to 2018. Published in August 2025, Elizabeth’s latest book Prove It lays bare the scientific method in five contemporary vignettes. Her other books include: The Genome Generation and Stem Cells. In 2019 Elizabeth received the Medal of the Australian Society for Medical Research and an honorary doctorate from Monash University. She serves as an adjunct fellow at La Trobe University and on an advisory committee for Latrobe University Press.\nDoes Tylenol cause autism? Is Dark Energy a real phenomenon? Can experience be inherited? If CO2 levels double, will the planetary temperature rise by 2°C or 5°C. Experts disagree. Indeed, there’s no shortage of controversies in science. While such disagreements dismay the public, they fuel scientific progress. The scientific method is not about proclaiming truth; it is about testing theories. “Take nobody’s word for it” (Nullius in verba) is the motto of the British Royal Society dating back to 1660. Using contemporary vignettes Elizabeth Finkel will sketch the scientific method at work.\n$125.00 three course dinner with wine.\nPlease note Elizabeth has indicated that, if members and their guests bring along their copies of her book on Tuesday, she’s happy to sign your book.Their will not be sales only signing of copies purchased on the day.\n
