SUMMARY:HISTORY CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 12 March at 2.00pm\nSpeaker: Distinguished Service Professor Emerita Sheila Fitzpatrick\nSubject: Stalin and some Soviet “souls” lost under his watch\nStalin ruled the Soviet Union for a quarter of a century until his death in 1953. State terror claimed many victims during his rule, but a half million “souls” (the Russian term for people as property under serfdom) who found themselves in Germany at the end of the Second World War escaped by refusing repatriation. Drawing on her recent books Lost Souls (2024) and Death of Stalin (2025), Club member Distinguished Service Professor Emerita Sheila Fitzpatrick will explore the world of late Stalinism and the fate of the some who failed to return to it.\n$60.00 for optional one course lunch with wine \n
