SUMMARY:CLASSICS CIRCLE SATURDAY SYMPOSIUM
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 14 March at 9.30am to 2.30pm\nSpeakers: Dr. Becky Clifton, Dr. Alison Inglis AM (Club Member) and Dr. Roslynne Bell\nSubject: Cleopatra: Roman visions of an Egyptian Queen\nIn Egypt, Cleopatra VII was presented as a queen, a pharaoh and a goddess. The Roman sources for her life however, are many and varied. They present her as dangerous, a seductress, a witch, liar and manipulator. In 19th century art though, she is seen as an orientalist femme fatale. Our three speakers from the University of Melbourne will explore the different ways Cleopatra has been portrayed across the centuries and the reasons for this. And just in case we missed something, there will be a quiz to check on those elusive details.\nThis is always a wonderful day.\n \n
