DESCRIPTION:Monday 24 November at 6.30pm\nSpeaker: Professor Andrew Pask The School of Biosciences The University of Melbourne.\nSubject: Bringing back the Tasmanian tiger from extinction.\nBringing extinct animals back from the dead using advances in DNA science and reproductive technologies is no longer science fiction but is fast becoming a reality. Australia has the world’s highest rate of mammal extinctions including one of our unique marsupials, the thylacine or Tasmanian tiger. Professor Pask will discuss recent work on the thylacine de-extinction project and the toolkit developed for this purpose including deciphering its genome, which is the genetic blueprint or set of instructions on how to build a thylacine. Other tools include establishing stem cell technologies and marsupial assisted reproductive technologies.
