DESCRIPTION:Monday 6 October at 6.30pm, Dinner 7.30pm\nSpeaker: Dr Leanne McNamara, Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History, Department of Languages and Cultures, La Trobe University.\nSubject: Bald Lies & Beauty Queens: Caesar, Cleopatra and the politics of appearance.\nPlutarch’s account of the meeting between Caesar and Cleopatra is legendary. In modernity, many glamorous Hollywood Cleopatras, all wearing dramatic eye makeup, have rolled from a carpet to land at a much older Caesar’s feet. Even in antiquity, Cleopatra’s beauty and adornment, and Caesar’s thinning hair were discussed. But Cleopatra’s association with cosmetics went far beyond self-embellishment. An ancient treatise on cosmetics containing treatments for hair loss amongst other remedies, is attributed to her, as is a wider knowledge of pharmacology, including aphrodisiacs and the potentially deadly effects of snake venom. Leanne will discuss Cleopatra’s cosmetic and other medicinal recipes in the context of the ancient politics of appearance, and we would be delighted if you could join us.\n$70 for one course dinner with wine.\n
