SUMMARY:PHILOSOPHY CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Monday 4 August at 6.00pm\nSPEAKER: Dr Gerhard Wiesenfeldt, History and Philosophy of Science, University of Melbourne.\nSUBJECT: Demonic technologies? Understanding digital media through early modern demonology\nThe science fiction author Arthur C. Clarke famously claimed that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”. There is a long history of similar claims that understood technological processes as inherently magical. Such understanding fits well into the medieval and early modern meaning of magic as the realm where you knew about effects but were ignorant about causes. This presentation will look at the interpretations of technology as magic and use early modern epistemic categories to inquire which specific forms of magic come into play. The core argument is that in human interactions with digital media or information and communications technology we act as if we were practising demonic magic. We encounter non-humans agents with powers beyond our control and engage with them in precarious ways following prescriptions and personal experiences.\n$70.00 for one course dinner with wine.\n
