SUMMARY:CLUB DINNER
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 26 August at 6.00pm for 6.30pm\nSpeaker: Dr Adelina Modesti, Honorary Senior Fellow in Art History and Art Curatorship, School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne\nSubject: Professional Women Artists in Renaissance and Baroque Italy\nContinuing the Club’s examination of all things Italian in August, and especially women’s contribution to culture, we are privileged to have Dr Adelina Modesti speak to us at the Club Dinner.\nArtemisia Gentileschi was the most significant woman artist in early modern Italy. After a brief introduction to her and a discussion of Dr Modesti’s discovery of her long-lost painting Susanna and the Elders (1652), the talk will focus on the professionalisation of women’s artistic practice in Bologna, with successful figures like Lavinia Fontana and Elisabetta Sirani. The city of Bologna in Northern Italy boasts the largest school of female artists working in the early modern period, with 68 professional women painters, sculptors, draughtspersons, printmakers and embroiderers documented between the 15th and 18th centuries. Dr Modesti, a dual national who has lived between Bologna and Melbourne since the 1990s and is a regular guest speaker in Italy, will examine the reasons that made Bologna such a receptive place for female creativity.\n$125.00 for three course dinner with wine.\n
