Women are a vital part of Australia’s Italian immigration story and have made major long-lasting contributions to Australia’s history. This special presentation provides a unique opportunity to showcase and explore some of these fascinating but often unknown stories which are featured in the Italian Historical Society Collection of CO.AS.IT. Italian Assistance Association in Carlton. Hear about ‘La Mamma degli Italiani’ who worked closely with Arthur Calwell and Archbishop Mannix to provide much needed assistance to the Italian community as well as the proxy bride phenomenon which took place between 1945 and 1976 and resulted in around 12,000 Italian women leaving their home, family and friends to emigrate to Australia to meet their new husbands, and also successful entrepreneurs who in their own unique way changed the face of Australia forever, such as Mrs Varrenti who set up the first Italian grocery store in Carlton, the beginning of what is now Italian Lygon Street, and Carla Zampatti AC, celebrated Australian fashion and business icon.\n$95.00 for two course lunch with wine.\n
