SUMMARY:PHILOSOPHY CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Monday 7 July at 6.00pm\nSpeaker: Professor Craig Hassed, Monash Centre for Consciousness and Contemplative Studies\nSubject: Plato’s Conception of the Soul: Insights into Politics, Psychology and Modern Neuroscience\nAlfred North Whitehead, the noted philosopher, once wrote, “The safest general characterisation of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” The most influential book in Plato’s canon is The Republic, in which he lays out a conception of justice and the human soul or psyche. Plato describes at length three aspects of the psyche and from this conception, depending on which aspect of the psyche rules, Plato lays out different forms of government which vie for sovereignty over the individual and the state. What is most interesting, however, is that modern psychology and neuroscience are drawing surprisingly similar conclusions to those which Plato came to nearly two and a half thousand years ago. Can Plato’s conception of the soul shed light on today’s society and modern pandemics like poor mental health, conflict and addiction? This evening we will explore Plato’s conception of the soul and, with the aid of perspectives from neuroscience, see what light it might shed on things like sound government, happiness, justice and human flourishing.\n$70.00 for optional one course dinner with wine.\nConvenor: Zita Marks\n
