SUMMARY:SCIENCE AND MEDICINE
DESCRIPTION:Monday 23 June at 6.30pm\nSpeaker: Dr. Chris O’Donnell, Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine.\nSubject: Virtual autopsy: investigating death using modern medical imaging.\nVictorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) is one the world’s foremost forensic institutes, tasked with medicolegal death investigations on behalf of the State Coroner. Modern medical imaging has had an enormous impact on clinical medicine. VIFM introduced this technology and those procedures into death investigation, creating a new term ‘virtual autopsy’, whereby imaging supplements and, in many cases, replaces the traditional autopsy. This talk will explore the introduction, applications, and prospects of post-mortem imaging in a sophisticated death investigation environment, and show how the results might assist the living.\n
