SUMMARY:HISTORY CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Thursday: 9 July at 2.00pm\nSpeaker: Dr Liz Rushen AM\nSubject: Hoddle Grid: the great land grab\nDr Liz Rushen AM will speak about her exhibition, Hoddle Grid: the great land grab, currently installed at the Royal Historical Society. The first purchasers of allotments in Melbourne shared a common ambition: to build wealth in a fast-growing new settlement. The exhibition introduces some of these people — from merchants and investors whose fortunes were tied to global trade, to former convicts and innkeepers. They set in motion changes that would shape the city for generations. Some went on to amass considerable fortunes; others lost everything. Every allotment reveals Melbourne’s complex origins.\n
