DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 28 July at 6.00pm for 6.30pm\nSpeaker: Martine Letts FAIIA, HonLLD (ANU) in conversation with Club member Heather Lacey\nSubject: Australia and the world, and why it matters\nMartine has enjoyed a significant diplomatic career. In her 17-year career in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs, Martine was appointed Deputy Head of Mission and Australian Deputy Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna and was a special adviser to Foreign Minister Gareth Evans from 1992 to 1994. Martine specialised in arms control and disarmament on postings in Geneva and Vienna. Martine served as Australian Ambassador to Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay between 1998-2000. Martine was Secretary General of the Australian Red Cross, CEO of The Committee for Melbourne and has recently completed her term as Group CEO of Asia Link at the University of Melbourne.\nIn a wide-ranging conversation, Martine will discuss several highlights of her diplomatic career. Martine believes that Australia’s believes that Australia’s prosperity has gone hand in hand with its international relationships and that diplomacy is more important than ever in today’s fractured world. Martine will discuss the challenges of leadership in times of great change and how global events can impact Australia in unexpected ways. Does the Rules Based Order still matter? Lastly, on the eve of our Club’s celebration in August of Argentina as Country of the month, the conversation will turn to Martine’s time serving as Australian Ambassador in Buenos Aires, Argentina.\n$125.00 for a three course dinner with wine.\n
