SUMMARY:HISTORY CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 11 June at 2.00pm\nSpeaker: Professor David Goodman\nSubject: The American Revolution at 250\nOn July 4, 2026, the United States of America will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the vote to approve the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence. The Declaration enacted the political, philosophical, and legal separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain and defined the American Revolution.\nHistory Circle will recognise this landmark event in US History with a talk by Professor David Goodman of the University of Melbourne. In his talk Professor Goodman will discuss some of the recent controversies about the American Revolution. These include the New York Times 1619 Project in 2019, the Trump appointed 1776 Commission Report (2021) and the presidential executive orders from 2025, including Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History. Some of the hotspots of these recent debates include things now regarded by many historians as key moments of the Revolution-the British proclamation line of 1763 and Lord Dunsmore’s proclamation of 1775. These recent controversies are about race and slavery and can be contrasted to the century-old arguments between historians who emphasise the radical ideas of the revolution and those who study its social and economic contexts.\n
