SUMMARY:CLUB DINNER
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 26 May at 6.00pm for 6.30pm\nSpeaker: Dr Tilman Ruff AO\nSubject: Ending Nuclear Weapons\nTilman Ruff AO is a physician, board member and past co-president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (Nobel Peace Prize 1985); co-founder, founding chair and Australian board member of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Nobel Peace Prize 2017); Honorary Principal Fellow, School of Population and Global Health, University of Melbourne; and member of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons Scientific Network. A past president of the Medical Association for Prevention of War (Australia), he was director of travel medicine at Royal Melbourne Hospital and worked on hepatitis B control, immunisation and maternal and child health in Indonesia and Pacific island countries.\nIn 2026, the Doomsday Clock moved closer to midnight than ever. A new nuclear arms race accelerates with new more dangerous nuclear weapons. The last treaty constraining US and Russia weapons expired in February. No disarmament negotiations are underway. Nuclear threats and illegal military action under cover of nuclear arsenals escalate. Cyberwarfare, AI and climate stress compound the risks. According to Dr Ruff nuclear weapons pose the most acute existential threat to life on Earth and the 2017 UN nuclear weapons ban treaty is the best tool we have to control these weapons. In his presentation, Dr Ruff will review our nuclear predicament and explore paths to ending nuclear weapons (before they end us), particularly what Australians can do to shift our country from part of the problem to part of the solution.\n$125.00 for a three course dinner with wine.\n
