SUMMARY:SCIENCE AND MEDICINE CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Monday 27 April at 6.30pm\nSpeaker: Professor Wesley Thevathasan Cabrini Hospital and the University of Melbourne\nSubject: Precision medicine approaches to treating movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Essential Tremor\nMovement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease and Essential Tremor arise from faults within brain circuits. Professor Thevathasan will discuss new approaches that reflect a shift towards precisely tuning these abnormal brain networks rather than simply managing symptoms, which is currently the case. One such approach is deep brain stimulation where fine electrodes placed deep into the brain can dramatically improve movement and quality of life. However, success depends on millimetre accuracy and Professor Thevathasan’s work aims to improve precision by providing a “homing beacon” to guide the electrode placement. Another approach involves MRI-guided sound waves which disrupt the abnormal brain networks without opening the skull.\nPlease book online or email bookings@lyceumclubmelbmelb.org.au and indicate if you wish to stay for an optional dinner.\n$95.00 for a two-course dinner with wine.\n
