SUMMARY:HISTORY CIRCLE
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 9 April at 2.00pm\nSpeaker: Associate Professor of History Bart Ziino, Deakin University\nSubject: Remembering Australian women’s work in the Great War\nWomen played an enormous part in sustaining Australia’s participation in the Great War of 1914-18, especially through the Red Cross and patriotic organisations supporting soldiers at the front. This presentation examines the efforts of women patriotic workers, and their determination after the war to assert the value of their experience. While the vast majority of war memorials paid tribute to men who fought, women war workers persistently found opportunities to remember their experiences in public and within sympathetic circles. Here women could remember the war years as difficult and sorrowful, but also as a momentous time in which they had contributed meaningfully.\n
